ROUND 1 – 2026 | MARCELLIN V COORPAROO | GIFFIN PARK
Marcellin OC’s premiership defence has opened with a stern reminder of how hard it is to stay at the top.
The reigning QFA Division 3 Brisbane North premiers were beaten by Coorparoo at Giffin Park on Friday night, falling 8.9 (57) to 5.10 (40) in a Round 1 contest that swung sharply through the middle stages.
For the Eagles, it was a challenging start to 2026. There were promising signs early, and a late push that briefly put the result back in play, but Coorparoo’s third quarter surge proved the defining passage of the match.
Marcellin started like a side ready to continue where it left off last season. The Eagles hit the scoreboard first through a goal inside the opening minutes, before Coorparoo responded midway through the term. Marcellin then finished the quarter strongly, adding another major and taking a 2.2 (14) to 1.1 (7) lead into the first break.
At that stage, the visitors had control on the scoreboard and had made the most of their early opportunities. Coorparoo had managed just one goal for the quarter, while Marcellin’s pressure and cleaner finishing gave them a seven point buffer.
But the second term began to shift the shape of the match.
Coorparoo did not blow the game open before half time, but they slowly dragged it back onto their terms. The Kings added a goal and five behinds for the quarter, while Marcellin was restricted to a single behind. It was not a damaging scoreboard burst, but it was an important period in the contest. Coorparoo’s ability to lock the ball in, generate repeated scoring looks and prevent Marcellin from finding a major changed the momentum.
By half time, Coorparoo had edged ahead 2.6 (18) to 2.3 (15).
For Marcellin, the frustration was not that the game had slipped away. It had not. The Eagles trailed by only three points. But after an encouraging first quarter, the second term was a warning. Coorparoo had started to create the territory battle, and Marcellin had been unable to convert their early confidence into a stronger hold on the game.
The match was ultimately decided in the third quarter.
Marcellin gave themselves the perfect start after the main break, kicking the opening goal of the term to move back in front, 3.5 (23) to 2.6 (18). It was the moment the Eagles needed. After being held goalless in the second quarter, they had responded and briefly reclaimed control.
But from there, Coorparoo took over.
The home side kicked four unanswered goals in a decisive burst, turning a five point deficit into a 20 point lead. The scoreboard moved from 18 to 23 in Marcellin’s favour to 43 to 23 for Coorparoo. It was the stretch that broke the match open.
By three quarter time, Coorparoo led 6.7 (43) to 3.6 (24), having won the third term 4.1 to 1.3.
That quarter told the story of the night. Marcellin created chances, but Coorparoo landed the heavier blows. The Eagles added three scoring shots for the term, but only one was a goal. Coorparoo, by contrast, made their pressure count with four majors. In a low scoring game, that efficiency was the difference.
To Marcellin’s credit, the response came.
The Eagles did not fold in the final quarter. They pushed back hard, kicked two goals and dragged themselves into striking distance. When Marcellin goaled midway through the last term, the margin was cut to four points. After trailing by 20 late in the third quarter, the reigning premiers had forced the game back open.
But Coorparoo steadied when it mattered.
The Kings answered with two late goals of their own, restoring control and closing out a 17 point victory. Marcellin added a late behind, but the result had been settled.
Coorparoo finished with eight goals from 17 scoring shots, while Marcellin had 15 scoring shots for five goals. That conversion gap was significant. The Eagles were only two scoring shots behind across the night, but Coorparoo’s ability to convert their chances into goals gave them the scoreboard separation.
The final score, Coorparoo 8.9 (57) to Marcellin OC 5.10 (40), reflected a contest where Marcellin had patches of strong football but could not sustain them for long enough.
Coorparoo’s best players were listed as Zachariah Salmi, Elliot Escott Kenny, Billy Jacob Streets, Ruben Webb, Tom Fitzgerald and Dylan Reid. Webb, Reid and Zach Borrelli each kicked two goals, while Kieran Artis and Tom Fitzgerald added one apiece.
For Marcellin, the official match centre listed the five goals as team goals, with no individual goal scorers allocated. No best players were selected on the supplied sheet.
For the Eagles, the defeat is not a disaster. It is Round 1. It was away from home. They led at quarter time, fought back in the last, and were still close enough to make Coorparoo nervous deep into the match.
But it is a clear early challenge.
A premiership defence brings a different pressure. Opponents lift. Momentum swings get punished. And the margin between control and chase can shrink quickly.
Marcellin had control early. Coorparoo took it through the middle. The Eagles fought late. But the Kings made the decisive moves when the match was there to be won.
The title defence is underway, but it begins with work to do.
